Trump’s Tariff threat prompts Mexico to fill in smuggling tunnel and Canada to deploy helicopters and drones

Mexico and Canada have intensified border security measures in response to President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on their exports if they fail to curb illegal migration and drug trafficking. In Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, authorities filled a 300-meter smuggling tunnel leading to Texas and established shelters for deportees. Canada deployed Black Hawk helicopters, drones, and patrol dogs along its border.

Both countries are negotiating with U.S. officials, seeking to avoid tariffs that analysts warn could disrupt supply chains and push their economies into recession. Mexico reported taking back 4,000 migrants in Trump’s first week, while Canada stated that only 1% of fentanyl enters the U.S. through its border. However, Trump has maintained pressure on both nations.

Mexico’s Security Minister highlighted efforts to combat drug cartels, with over 90 tonnes of drugs seized. Canada announced an additional C$1.3 billion investment in border security and immigration. Diplomatic efforts are underway, with Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly set to meet U.S. and international officials.

Despite the crackdown, some migrants remain hopeful for legal entry into the U.S., including Venezuelan nationals stranded at the border. Both Mexico and Canada continue to lobby against the tariffs, emphasizing their mutually harmful economic impact.
