One Last Bite: Saying Goodbye to Jumbo Empanadas

If you’ve ever walked through Kensington Market on a random Saturday afternoon, chances are you’ve passed Jumbo Empanadas. And if you grew up Hispanic in Toronto? You’ve probably eaten there at least once — maybe after school, maybe after a night out, maybe just because you needed a quick bite that tasted like home.

For years, Jumbo wasn’t just another takeout spot. It was that reliable, no-frills place serving up hearty Chilean-style empanadas — golden, oversized, packed with that classic beef filling and paired with their iconic salsa. Cheap, filling, comforting. The kind of place you bring your non-Latino friends to and say, “Trust me. This is it.”

Now there’s a “for lease” sign in the window, and the news feels real. Owner Irene Morales has shared that she can no longer sacrifice her health for a struggling business. After decades of showing up for the community, she’s choosing herself.

And honestly? You can’t even be mad at that. It just makes it more emotional.

These places become part of our story. First dates. Quick lunches. Pre-party and Post-party stops. Family visits.

Jumbo Empanadas wasn’t flashy — but it was ours. And if this really is goodbye, it’s the end of a small but meaningful chapter in Toronto’s Latin food history.
