A devastating fire at the Port of Manta has destroyed dozens of fishing boats, dealing a major blow to one of Ecuador’s most important fishing communities.

The massive blaze erupted at the port in Manta, a key hub for Ecuador’s fishing and seafood export industry. Emergency crews spent several hours battling the flames before finally bringing the situation under control.

According to preliminary reports, at least 35 fishing vessels were destroyed while docked at the harbor. Many of the boats were constructed using fiberglass and other highly flammable materials, allowing the fire to spread rapidly from vessel to vessel.

Two people were injured during the incident, although officials have not yet released details regarding the extent of their injuries.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Early witness accounts suggest welding work was being carried out on one of the boats shortly before the blaze began. Investigators are examining whether maintenance activity may have accidentally sparked the fire.

Videos shared on social media captured dramatic scenes as towering flames engulfed multiple vessels while thick black smoke billowed over the city’s waterfront. Firefighters and port officials worked tirelessly to prevent the blaze from spreading to additional boats and nearby infrastructure.

The destruction is expected to have significant economic consequences for local fishermen and businesses that rely on Manta’s maritime industry. As one of Ecuador’s most important fishing ports, Manta plays a critical role in the country’s seafood exports and coastal economy.

Officials continue to assess the damage while coordinating support for those affected by the disaster.
