Guatemala is facing a second consecutive day of major road blockades as transport workers protest rising fuel prices.

Demonstrations that began Monday continued Tuesday, September 1, with protesters blocking major highways across several parts of the country.

Authorities reported at least 14 active roadblocks Tuesday morning, affecting San Marcos, Petén, Quetzaltenango and Suchitepéquez. 

Transport groups say rising gasoline and diesel prices are putting increasing pressure on drivers and businesses, while protesters are also demanding changes to the country’s road safety laws.

The disruptions have affected thousands of travellers and businesses, with Guatemala’s immigration agency warning that the blockades have even delayed passport distribution in some areas. 

The protests are quickly becoming a national issue as pressure grows on the government to address rising transportation and living costs.
