Twenty students graduated from Escuela Nueva Esperanza in Tijuana, facing challenges as the school lacks basic amenities like electricity and proper infrastructure. The graduation ceremony was held on a dirt road due to space constraints, with a wall providing shade. The school, situated near an Amazon fulfillment center, hasn’t seen promised improvements in the neighborhood, such as paved roads and increased utilities. Despite hardships, the school persists, relying on water deliveries and makeshift facilities. Administrators argue for government intervention to provide essential services and expand the school.
Amazon, however, disputes claims of neglect and emphasizes its contributions to the community, citing collaborations with local organizations, substantial donations, and support for causes like fighting malnutrition and aiding migrants. The company claims to have created over 15,000 jobs throughout the country with competitive salaries. While the school administrators contend that promises remain unfulfilled, Amazon spokesperson Jaime Negredo asserts the company’s commitment to positively impacting Tijuana’s communities through various initiatives and partnerships.
