Pope Leo XIV is heading to South America for one of the biggest international trips of his papacy so far, with stops planned across Uruguay, Argentina and Peru this November.
The Vatican has released the official itinerary for the 12-day Apostolic Journey, which will take place from November 6 to 17 and include visits to 10 cities across the three countries.
The journey will begin in Uruguay, where Pope Leo will visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida from November 6 to 8.
He will then travel to Argentina from November 8 to 11, making stops in Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján.
The final — and longest — portion of the trip will take place in Peru from November 11 to 17, with visits to Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa.
Peru will carry special significance for Pope Leo.
Before becoming pope, Leo spent roughly two decades serving in Peru as a missionary, priest and bishop. He served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 until 2023 and also holds Peruvian citizenship.
His return to Chiclayo is expected to be one of the most personal moments of the entire journey.
The Argentina visit will also be closely watched. Pope Leo will become the first pope to visit the country since John Paul II in 1987. His predecessor, Pope Francis, was born in Buenos Aires but never returned to Argentina during his 12-year papacy.
According to the Vatican’s schedule, Pope Leo will travel more than 31,000 kilometres during the South American journey, with dozens of meetings, speeches, Masses and public events planned along the way.
The November tour will mark Pope Leo XIV’s first visit to Latin America as pontiff — and a major moment for Catholic communities across the region.
