At least 68 people have been killed after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, leaving hundreds of passengers caught in one of the country’s deadliest railway disasters in recent years. Among those affected are seven Canadians, including six who sustained injuries and one who remains unaccounted for.

The devastating accident occurred Wednesday, October 28, 2026, just before 9 a.m. local time, near the town of Urda in Spain’s Toledo province.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as rescue workers searched through severely damaged train carriages for survivors.

Spanish authorities confirmed at least 68 deaths, with dozens of passengers hospitalized. The death toll could change as recovery operations continue.

What Happened in Spain?

The collision involved two high-speed passenger trains travelling from Madrid toward Seville.

According to Spanish railway authorities, a train operated by RENFE struck the rear of a stationary train operated by private rail company IRYO.

The impact derailed several carriages, leaving emergency responders facing a massive rescue operation.

Approximately 544 passengers were aboard the two trains.

Investigators are examining a malfunction involving the railway’s signalling and safety systems. Preliminary information indicates that a computer problem disrupted train operations before the collision.

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the RENFE train had been authorized to continue despite a stop signal, raising serious questions about how the railway’s safety procedures were handled.

Authorities have launched an investigation to establish exactly what went wrong.

Seven Canadians Among Those Affected

Global Affairs Canada confirmed that six Canadian citizens were injured in the crash.

A seventh Canadian remains unaccounted for.

Department spokesperson Thida Ith said Canadian consular officials are working with Spanish authorities to gather information and assist those affected.

The identities of the Canadians have not been publicly released, and officials have not provided details about the severity of their injuries.

Canadian authorities have also not confirmed whether the missing individual is among those hospitalized or deceased.

Prime Minister Mark Carney Responds

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences following the tragedy, offering Canada’s support to Spain and the families affected.

Carney said Canada stands ready to provide assistance wherever necessary.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand also confirmed that Canadian officials are communicating directly with Spanish authorities to ensure affected Canadians receive appropriate support.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon contacted his Spanish counterpart following the accident.

The Canadian government’s immediate priority remains locating the missing Canadian and providing assistance to those injured.

Spain Faces Another Major Railway Tragedy

Wednesday’s collision marks Spain’s second deadly high-speed railway accident in 2026.

In January, another devastating train crash in southern Spain claimed 46 lives.

The latest disaster has renewed concerns about railway safety in a country known for operating one of Europe’s most extensive high-speed rail networks.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the crash site and promised a comprehensive investigation.

The government has also declared three days of national mourning.

The tragedy has prompted questions about railway infrastructure, signalling systems and operational oversight, particularly following two deadly incidents in the same year.

Rescue Operations and Investigation Continue

Emergency crews have been working to recover victims, assist survivors and identify those still missing.

Spanish authorities are coordinating with hospitals, emergency services and international consular officials as families await news about their loved ones.

Investigators will now focus on determining how a train was permitted to proceed along a section of track occupied by another train.

For Canadian families affected by the tragedy, the uncertainty surrounding the missing passenger remains particularly distressing.

As Spain mourns the victims of this devastating collision, Canadian officials continue working to account for all seven Canadians caught in the disaster.
