Paraguay’s LGBTQ+ Artists Are Using Art to Drive Social Change

A growing collective of LGBTQ+ artists in Paraguay is using creativity, culture and community to promote visibility and advocate for equality.

Founded in 2023, the Paraguayan Network of LGBTQ+ Artists (REPAR) brings together more than 100 artists and activists from across the country. The organization was created by Paraguayan artist and human rights advocate Hugo González, who says art can be a powerful tool for social change.

Rather than relying solely on traditional activism, REPAR organizes cultural festivals, drag competitions, parades and artistic events that celebrate diversity while creating space for conversations about inclusion and equal rights.

The organization welcomes LGBTQ+ members from all backgrounds, including trans, bisexual, non-binary and drag artists, and has expanded its presence beyond Asunción into cities including Ciudad del Este, Encarnación and the Chaco region.

REPAR also works alongside organizations such as Amnesty International Paraguay and Casa Diversa, while remaining an independent, member-supported organization.

Although Paraguay has made progress in LGBTQ+ visibility, advocates note that the country still lacks comprehensive anti-discrimination protections, legal recognition of same-sex unions and gender identity laws.

For REPAR, however, the focus remains on building community through culture.

By blending music, visual arts, performance and activism, the organization hopes to inspire dialogue, celebrate diversity and create a more inclusive future for Paraguay.
