A powerful earthquake struck southern Peru on Thursday afternoon, sending residents into the streets as shaking was felt across several parts of the country, including Lima.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.7, while Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported a stronger magnitude of 7.2. The quake struck at approximately 1 p.m. local time, with the IGP locating the epicentre about 35 kilometres north of Coracora in the Ayacucho region at a depth of 108 kilometres.

The earthquake was felt across a wide area, including Ayacucho, Ica, Arequipa, Cusco and the capital, Lima. According to updated reports, at least two people were injured during evacuations in Coracora, while authorities reported damage to 22 homes, six health centres and a school in several communities. Rockfalls were also reported near Coracora.

Despite the strength of the earthquake, there have been no reported deaths. Peru’s Navy also confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.

Peru sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions in the world, making earthquakes relatively common throughout the country.

Authorities continue to assess affected communities and are urging residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
