A new global study has revealed which countries are the happiest in Latin America—and Uruguay has claimed the top spot in South America.

According to the 2026 World Happiness Report, Uruguay ranks 31st in the world, narrowly ahead of Brazil (32nd)and well ahead of Argentina (44th), making it the highest-ranked country in South America.

Across all of Latin America, however, Costa Rica continues to lead the region, ranking an impressive 4th globally, followed by Mexico (12th).

The Happiest Countries in Latin America

  1. 🇨🇷 Costa Rica (4th)
  2. 🇲🇽 Mexico (12th)
  3. 🇺🇾 Uruguay (31st)
  4. 🇧🇷 Brazil (32nd)
  5. 🇦🇷 Argentina (44th)
  6. 🇨🇱 Chile (50th)
  7. 🇵🇾 Paraguay (57th)
  8. 🇪🇨 Ecuador (59th)
  9. 🇨🇴 Colombia (68th)
  10. 🇵🇪 Peru (72nd)
  11. 🇧🇴 Bolivia (78th)
  12. 🇻🇪 Venezuela (80th)

The report, produced by the University of Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre in partnership with Gallup and the United Nations, measures how people rate the quality of their lives based on factors including social support, income, healthy life expectancy, personal freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption.

Researchers also noted that many Latin American countries report higher levels of happiness than their economic performance alone would predict, thanks largely to strong family ties, close-knit communities and social connections—qualities that have long been part of the region’s culture.

Uruguay’s strong institutions and political stability helped it earn the highest ranking in South America, while Costa Rica and Mexico continue to set the pace for Latin America as a whole.

Globally, Finland remained the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland and Denmark.
