The reggaeton and urbano music scenes, traditionally dominated by male artists like Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Wisin & Yandel, Rauw Alejandro, Farruko, and J Balvin, are undergoing a transformation. Women are increasingly making their mark, as seen with Karol G and emerging Puerto Rican talents like Villano Antillano, RaiNao, and Young Miko.

Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito became Spotify’s fourth most-streamed album globally in 2024, breaking barriers as the first woman to win the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album in February 2024. Reflecting on her win, Karol G highlighted the challenges women face in the male-dominated industry and her pride in representing women worldwide.

Young Miko is another standout. Known for empowering the LGBTQ+ community through her bold Latin trap flows, her 2022 EP Trap Kitty and debut album Att produced viral hits like “RiRi” and “offline” featuring Feid. In 2024, she earned her first Grammy nomination for Best Música Urbana Album, becoming the only woman in a traditionally male category. Reacting to the nomination, she expressed joy and gratitude for the recognition.

Both Karol G and Young Miko see the industry evolving, with more space being carved out for diverse voices and perspectives.
