Keiko Fujimori Sworn In as Peru’s New President, Promises Tough Crackdown on Crime

Keiko Fujimori has officially been sworn in as Peru’s new president, becoming the country’s ninth leader in just 10 years after narrowly winning June’s presidential runoff.

In her inaugural address, the conservative leader pledged to confront Peru’s worsening security crisis by deploying the armed forces to areas hardest hit by organized crime, drug trafficking and illegal mining. She said the military will temporarily lead security operations in regions under states of emergency until public safety is restored.

Fujimori campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform, proposing measures that include stronger action against criminal gangs, tighter immigration enforcement, and reforms aimed at combating extortion and violence.

Her presidency begins during one of Peru’s most challenging periods in recent history, with rising gang activity and political instability dominating the national landscape.

The daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, Keiko remains one of Peru’s most polarizing political figures. While supporters believe she can restore order and stability, critics continue to raise concerns over her father’s legacy and the potential impact of her proposed security policies.

Several Latin American leaders attended Tuesday’s inauguration, including the presidents of Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay, Bolivia and Chile, highlighting the regional significance of Peru’s political transition.

Fujimori will serve a five-year term through 2031.
