Formula 1 could be heading back to Argentina — and President Javier Milei says he wants to personally help make it happen.
Argentina is stepping up its campaign to bring a Formula 1 Grand Prix back to Buenos Aires, nearly three decades after the country last hosted the world’s premier motorsport series.
Milei revealed that he plans to attend the upcoming FIA Americas Congress in Buenos Aires, scheduled for August 31 to September 2, where he intends to push Argentina’s case with international motorsport officials.
If successful, it would mark a massive return for a country with a deep history in Formula 1.
Argentina last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 1998, when Michael Schumacher won for Ferrari at the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez in Buenos Aires.
Now that same circuit is being prepared for a possible comeback.
Buenos Aires Is Already Preparing
This isn’t simply an idea being thrown around.
Major renovations are underway at the historic Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez, with the goal of obtaining FIA Grade 1 certification — the level required for a circuit to host Formula 1.
Buenos Aires officials have also been speaking with Formula 1 leadership about the possibility of returning to the calendar. Earlier this year, an Argentine delegation travelled to the Miami Grand Prix to meet F1 executives and present the progress being made at the circuit.
The renovated Buenos Aires circuit has already secured another major international event: MotoGP is scheduled to race there in 2027.
Landing Formula 1 would take Argentina’s motorsports comeback to an entirely different level.
The Franco Colapinto Effect
Argentina also has something it didn’t have a few years ago — a homegrown Formula 1 star.
Franco Colapinto is currently racing for Alpine during the 2026 F1 season, helping ignite a new generation of Argentine motorsport fans.
The enthusiasm surrounding Colapinto was on full display earlier this year when tens of thousands of fans packed the streets of Buenos Aires for an F1 demonstration featuring the Argentine driver.
Having Colapinto racing in an Argentine Grand Prix would undoubtedly create one of the loudest and most passionate weekends on the Formula 1 calendar.
Argentina Has Serious F1 History
Formula 1 and Argentina go back to the earliest days of the sport.
The country produced one of the greatest drivers in racing history, Juan Manuel Fangio, who won five Formula 1 world championships during the 1950s.
The Argentine Grand Prix was held numerous times between 1953 and 1998, with Buenos Aires becoming one of South America’s historic motorsport destinations.
But Formula 1 hasn’t returned since.
Today, Brazil’s São Paulo Grand Prix remains the only South American race on the official 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
Adding Buenos Aires would give F1 a second South American stop and bring the championship back into one of the region’s biggest sporting markets.
So, Is Formula 1 Actually Coming Back?
Not yet.
There is currently no confirmed Argentine Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar, and Argentina would still need to secure an agreement with Formula 1 in addition to completing the necessary upgrades and certification of the circuit.
But this has moved well beyond fans simply wishing for F1 to return.
The circuit is being renovated. Government officials are involved. Discussions with Formula 1 have taken place. Milei is publicly backing the campaign. And Argentina once again has one of its own drivers competing in the sport.
After nearly 30 years away, the possibility of hearing Formula 1 engines roaring through Buenos Aires again suddenly doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
