Former Major League Baseball outfielder Raúl Mondesi has been sentenced by a Dominican court to six years and nine months in jail and fined $507,000 for corruption during his tenure as mayor of San Cristobal. Prosecutors alleged Mondesi embezzled $5 million between 2010 and 2016. Mondesi, who also served as a lawmaker and pursued a Senate bid after his mayoral term, completed six years of house arrest prior to sentencing. His baseball career spanned 13 seasons, notably with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won NL Rookie of the Year in 1994, and included stints with several other teams. His son, Adalberto Mondesi, is a former big league shortstop and World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals.
