Toronto’s electronic music scene is about to get a major dose of Latino energy.

International superstar DJ GORDO takes over Toronto’s Port Lands tonight, September 6, for a massive edition of his globally recognized TARAKA experience alongside Francis Mercier.

And for the Latin community, there’s another reason to pay attention.

GORDO, whose real name is Diamanté Blackmon, was born in Washington, D.C. to Nicaraguan parents and spent part of his childhood growing up in Guatemala before moving back to the United States.

Those Central American roots have remained an important part of his identity even as his career has taken him to some of the biggest stages in electronic music.

Tonight, he brings that journey to Toronto.

From Carnage to GORDO

Longtime electronic music fans might remember him by another name: Carnage.

After becoming one of the biggest names in EDM under that identity, Blackmon retired the Carnage name and reinvented himself as GORDO, moving toward house and electronic sounds influenced by cultures from around the world.

The transformation took his career in an entirely new direction.

GORDO went on to become Billboard’s No. 1 Hot 100 Producer and was one of the major creative forces behind Drake’s house-influenced album “Honestly, Nevermind,” producing six tracks on the project.

He has since taken GORDO and his TARAKA concept around the world.

Now TARAKA Takes Over Toronto

Tonight’s event isn’t happening inside a regular nightclub.

Organizers have built a purpose-built open-air venue in Toronto’s Port Lands featuring large-scale staging, immersive 360-degree production and an experience inspired by some of the world’s biggest electronic music destinations.

GORDO will headline alongside internationally acclaimed Haitian DJ and producer Francis Mercier, whose Afro House sound has also exploded around the world.

The event follows the massive Black Coffee showcase held at the Port Lands earlier this summer, which attracted more than 10,000 people and even featured a surprise appearance from Drake.

Now the same team is going even bigger with TARAKA.

For GORDO, it represents another huge moment in a career that began with a kid from a Nicaraguan family, raised partly in Guatemala, who eventually became one of the biggest Latino names in global electronic music.

And tonight, thousands of people in Toronto will get to experience it.
