El Salvador is wrapping up 2025 as one of the region’s fastest-rising tourism success stories, posting historic numbers across both aviation and visitor arrivals. According to the Executive Port Authority (CEPA), El Salvador International Airport processed 5.2 million passengers this year, including domestic, international, and transit travelers—cementing the country’s growing role as a Central American air hub.

December Caps a Strong Year for Aviation

December 2025 proved especially strong, with 524,000 passengers passing through the airport—up 4% year over year. Arrivals alone reached 242,093, reflecting steady growth in international tourism. Commercial flight operations increased 9%, driven by new routes, added airlines, and higher flight frequencies. Airport operations were supported by more than 1,800 staff members, ensuring smooth and secure travel during the busy holiday period.

Tourism Hits Historic Highs

Beyond aviation, tourism delivered equally impressive results. The Ministry of Tourism of El Salvador reported 4.1 million international visitors in 2025, surpassing annual targets. Eny Aguiñada, president of the Salvadoran Tourism Institute (ISTU), described 2025 as one of the strongest years on record, citing the country’s improved global image and growing regional appeal.

The top visitor markets were:

  • Guatemala: 1.5 million visitors (+13%)

  • United States: 1.3 million visitors (+1.3%)

  • Honduras: 792,000 visitors (+6%)

While 44% of travelers arrived by air, a majority entered by land, highlighting El Salvador’s growing popularity among neighboring countries.

Holiday Season Surge

Tourism surged during December, with 271,000 international visitors, a 14% increase over the previous year. Attractions including beaches, national parks, and holiday destinations like Villa Navideña recorded a combined 5.9 million visits, underscoring El Salvador’s emergence as a year-round destination.

Economic Impact and Looking Ahead

Tourism Minister Morena Valdez emphasized that 83% of visitors stayed at least one night, directly boosting the economy through hotels, restaurants, and local attractions. Continued investments in airport infrastructure, security, eco-tourism, and destination marketing are positioning the country for sustained momentum.

With 2025 exceeding expectations, officials are optimistic that 2026 will bring even stronger results. Rising air connectivity, regional demand, and a renewed international image are placing El Salvador firmly on track to become one of Central America’s leading tourism hubs—a transformation driven by strategy, investment, and growing global interest.
