Can Argentina Defend the Title Amid Chaos at the Top?

After reaching the pinnacle of world football, Argentina National Team now finds itself navigating turbulence off the pitch.

Following their historic 2022 World Cup victory, the Argentine Football Association (AFA), led by Claudio Tapia, is facing mounting pressure amid corruption investigations, controversial league changes, and a growing political clash with President Javier Milei.

Tapia, once celebrated for appointing coach Lionel Scaloni—a decision widely credited for Argentina’s World Cup triumph—now finds himself at the center of a storm. From tax evasion charges to fan backlash inside stadiums, public sentiment has shifted dramatically.

At the heart of the conflict is a deeper battle over the future of Argentine football. Milei has pushed for the privatization of clubs, a move strongly resisted by the AFA. Meanwhile, structural changes to the domestic league—such as expanding it to 30 teams—have drawn criticism for lowering competitiveness.

Through it all, Lionel Messi and the players have kept their distance.

“We are football players… we don’t get involved in politics,” said Rodrigo De Paul, emphasizing the team’s focus as they prepare to defend their title.

Still, questions remain.

Argentina’s preparation has raised eyebrows, with friendly matches scheduled against lower-ranked opponents—fueling concerns about readiness heading into the tournament.

Yet if history has shown anything, it’s that football doesn’t always follow logic. Teams have won before despite chaos behind the scenes.

For Argentina, the challenge is clear:

Block out the noise, stay united—and prove that what happens off the field doesn’t define what happens on it.
