Donald Trump is once again creating controversy over the map of North America.

The U.S. president posted an image on Truth Social showing the American flag stretched across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Greenland, Iceland and parts of the Caribbean.

Across the enormous territory were the words: “United States of America.”

Trump posted the image without a caption or explanation, leaving people around the world debating exactly what message he was trying to send.

The post immediately drew international attention.

Iceland went as far as summoning U.S. Ambassador Billy Long, with the country’s foreign ministry calling the post “completely inappropriate.”

Denmark’s foreign minister also criticized the image, while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland and its people have repeatedly made clear they do not want to become part of the United States.

Canada and Mexico Are in the Picture Too

For Canadians, the image is particularly provocative.

Trump has repeatedly spoken about Canada becoming America’s “51st state,” and the latest post arrives while Canada and the United States remain locked in a major trade dispute.

Mexico is also completely covered by the American flag in Trump’s map, along with Central America and several Caribbean nations.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded around the controversy by reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty, declaring that the country “is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country.”

Trump has not announced any policy seeking to absorb Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean into the United States, making the meaning behind the image unclear.

Still, with Canada-U.S. tensions already high and Trump’s longstanding interest in acquiring Greenland, the map has attracted plenty of attention.

And for millions of Canadians and Latinos looking at a map where their countries suddenly appear covered by an American flag, it’s certainly getting people talking.
