20 Years Later, Aventura & Don Omar’s “Ella y Yo” Hits 1 Billion Views

If you grew up Latino in the 2000s, there’s a pretty good chance you don’t just know “Ella y Yo” — you know exactly when to sing Romeo Santos’ part and when to become Don Omar.

Now one of Latin music’s most iconic collaborations has officially joined YouTube’s Billion Views Club.

More than two decades after Aventura and Don Omar released “Ella y Yo,” the song’s official music video has surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube.

And honestly? It still hits.

Bachata Meets Reggaeton

Released in 2005, “Ella y Yo” brought together two artists who were helping transform Latin music at the time.

Aventura, led by Romeo Santos, was taking Dominican bachata far beyond its traditional audience, while Puerto Rico’s Don Omar was becoming one of the biggest stars of reggaeton’s first global explosion.

Instead of simply putting both sounds on the same track, “Ella y Yo” became something closer to a mini telenovela.

Don Omar tells Romeo about an affair he’s having with a married woman. Romeo listens as his friend explains the situation — until the song reaches its legendary twist:

The woman is Romeo’s wife.

The back-and-forth storytelling became as memorable as the beat itself.

It Wasn’t Originally a Massive Mainstream Hit

Here’s what makes the billion-view milestone even better.

“Ella y Yo” peaked at just No. 97 on the Billboard Hot 100, although it performed much better within Latin music, reaching No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and topping both Latin Rhythm Airplay and Tropical Airplay.

Twenty years later, the numbers tell a very different story.

The official video — which wasn’t uploaded to YouTube until 2019 — has now crossed one billion views.

It becomes Aventura’s first video to reach the milestone and Don Omar’s third as a lead artist, featured artist or collaborator.

A Latin Classic That Never Went Away

Maybe the craziest thing about “Ella y Yo” is that it never really became an old song.

It still plays at Latin parties. Younger generations continue discovering it. And at Aventura concerts, fans have even been brought onstage to perform Don Omar’s part opposite Romeo Santos.

That’s staying power.

A bachata-reggaeton collaboration released during the first great global wave of reggaeton is still collecting hundreds of millions of streams two decades later.

One billion views later, we’re still waiting for Don Omar to realize that’s Romeo’s wife. 😂🇩🇴🇵🇷
