J Balvin proved this weekend that he doesn’t need surprise guests or elaborate gimmicks to command a festival crowd. Headlining the opening night of Sueños Music Festival 2026 in Chicago’s Grant Park, the Medellín superstar delivered a hit-filled performance that reminded fans why he remains one of the most influential artists in reggaetón history.
Taking the stage on Saturday night, Balvin leaned on a catalogue packed with global anthems, performing fan favourites like Ginza and La Canción while thousands of fans sang along word for word. Rather than introducing new concepts or chasing trends, Balvin let the music speak for itself, showcasing more than a decade of hits that helped take Colombian reggaetón to audiences around the world.
Beyond the music, Balvin also took moments to connect with fans on a deeper level. During Mental Health Awareness Month, he encouraged attendees to embrace one another and continued his long-standing advocacy for mental health awareness. He also received one of the loudest reactions of the night after acknowledging immigrants “fighting day by day,” a message that resonated strongly with the festival crowd.
The performance capped a stacked Saturday lineup that included Kali Uchis, Paulo Londra, Danny Ocean, and Manuel Turizo. It also comes during a busy month for Balvin, who recently released the collaborative album Omerta with Ryan Castro and was announced as part of the opening ceremony lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Mexico.
More than a nostalgia trip, Balvin’s Sueños set served as a reminder that while reggaetón continues to evolve, many of the artists shaping today’s movement are still building on the foundation he helped create.
