Daddy Yankee may have stepped away from music, but he’s continuing to grow his legacy in a new industry.
The reggaeton icon has partnered with renowned Peruvian chef Jaime Pesaque to open a new Peruvian restaurant in New York City, bringing one of Latin America’s most celebrated cuisines to one of the world’s biggest food capitals.
The casual dining concept will focus on traditional Peruvian dishes, with a special emphasis on anticuchos—the country’s famous grilled skewers.
Interestingly, the project almost took a different direction.
According to Pesaque, investors originally pitched Daddy Yankee on opening a Mexican restaurant. However, the Puerto Rican superstar insisted the concept showcase Peruvian cuisine instead, reflecting his longtime appreciation for Peru’s food and culture.
During a previous visit to Peru, Daddy Yankee explored the country’s culinary scene and even cooked anticuchosalongside Pesaque at the chef’s internationally acclaimed restaurant, Mayta. The collaboration was kept private at the time as the restaurant project remained under wraps.
The restaurant is expected to open in September in New York City.
With this venture, Daddy Yankee joins a growing list of global entertainers expanding beyond music and into the restaurant business. Partnering with one of Peru’s most respected chefs signals an ambitious project that aims to introduce even more people to the country’s world-famous cuisine.
