Just a few years ago, Toronto was earning an unwelcome nickname — “Gotham North.” But that dark narrative is quickly fading.
According to new data from Toronto Police, major crime across the city has fallen significantly in 2025, with sharp declines in everything from homicides to auto thefts.
Major Crime Down 10%
Toronto’s overall crime rate is showing real progress. The latest Major Crimes Indicators report shows total major crimes are down 10.3% year-over-year, with 38,885 incidents reported so far in 2025 — that’s 4,454 fewer than the same time last year.
Homicides Hit Record Lows
The biggest improvement is in homicides, which have dropped to historic lows.
So far this year, Toronto has recorded 35 homicides, a 53.9% decrease from 2024’s 76 cases.
For perspective, Chicago — a city of similar size — has reported over 359 homicides in 2025.
Auto Theft Finally Slowing Down
After years of headlines about car thefts, Toronto’s auto theft epidemic is finally easing.
The city has logged 5,805 vehicle thefts so far this year — 2,553 fewer than in 2024 — marking a 30.5% decline.
Robberies, Break-ins & Assaults Also Down
-
Robberies: Down 16.2% to 2,237 incidents
-
Break-and-enters: Down 12.5% to 5,042 incidents
-
Assaults: Down 2% to 21,393 incidents, still Toronto’s most common major crime
Sexual Violence & Theft Over
Reports of sexual violence have also dropped 11.8%, with 2,685 cases recorded so far in 2025.
The only category showing an increase is Theft Over, which rose 5.4% — up 87 cases to 1,688.
After years of being labeled unsafe, Toronto’s latest numbers paint a very different picture.
Major crimes are trending down, homicides are at some of their lowest levels in recent memory, and the city’s long fight against auto theft is finally showing results.
Toronto may not be perfect — but in 2025, it’s no longer the “Gotham” many once feared.
