FIFA Sanctions El Salvador Over Racist Fan Behavior in World Cup Qualifiers

FIFA has hit the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) with sanctions following racist and discriminatory incidents by fans during El Salvador’s CONCACAF 2026 World Cup qualifier against Suriname.

The punishment includes a fine of $62,715, which must be directed toward an approved anti-discrimination plan, and a partial stadium closure of at least 15% capacity for the national team’s next home match — specifically targeting the stands behind the goals where the incidents occurred.

The match in question took place on September 8 at Cuscatlán Stadium, where fans allegedly hurled racist insults and made discriminatory gestures toward Surinamese players.

In a statement, FESFUT condemned the actions and reaffirmed its commitment to work with FIFA, CONCACAF, and other governing bodies to ensure Salvadoran football fosters respect, equality, and unity.

On the field, La Selecta, led by Colombian coach Hernán “Bolillo” Gómez, sit second in Group A with three points. Suriname currently leads with four, while Panama and Guatemala trail with two and one point, respectively.

El Salvador will face Panama on October 10 at home and then meet Guatemala on October 14, both under the weight of FIFA’s sanctions.
