Imilla girls popularizing skateboarding in Bolivia

ImillaSkate, a Bolivian skateboarding collective founded in 2019, is breaking stereotypes by performing the sport in polleras, the traditional skirts of cholitas, indigenous Andean women. Skating down the slopes of Cochabamba, these women challenge the idea that skateboarding is a male-dominated sport and proudly embrace their heritage. Their message is clear: passion transcends clothing and background.

Brazilian photographer Luisa Dörr was captivated by their story, leading to her 2021 series Imilla, named after the Aymara and Quechua word for “young girl.” Dörr, known for empowering portraits of women, previously gained recognition with Firsts (2016-2017) and Falleras (2018). In 2019, she won third prize in the World Press Photo awardsfor her work in the Stories/Portraits category.
