Votes currently being counted in El Salvador, where Bukele’s victory is all but assured

El Salvador is counting votes in an election where President Nayib Bukele is likely to win a second term. Bukele, a strong leader, is popular for reducing violence by cracking down on gangs, but this has led to the world’s highest imprisonment rate and human rights concerns. Critics argue that innocent people are being detained, and prisoners are facing harsh conditions.

The election has become a choice for people between giving up some freedoms for safety. Bukele defends his actions, comparing them to treating a disease. Despite admitting some police mistakes, he claims the judicial system has fixed wrongful detentions.

If Bukele wins big, he could continue his forceful leadership style. His ability to run again is due to changes in the judiciary. Other leaders in the region are watching, and the “Bukele method” is influencing policies in Honduras and Ecuador. A 2023 poll suggests that in many Latin American countries, people wouldn’t mind undemocratic rule if it solves problems. Results are expected soon.
