South Park Renames Itself “South America” to Mock Trump — and Canada Is Right in the Middle of the Joke

After nearly three decades as South Park, one of television’s most famous animated shows has apparently decided it needs a new name.

Meet “South America.”

Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced that they are changing the name of South Park to “SOUTH AMERICA” ahead of the show’s upcoming 29th season.

But don’t worry — the fictional Colorado town hasn’t suddenly moved thousands of kilometres south.

The whole thing is a very South Park-style joke aimed directly at U.S. President Donald Trump and his recent push to rename geographic locations with “America” in their names.

And Canada is right in the middle of it.

The announcement follows Trump’s executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

Yes, the same Lake Ontario sitting directly beside Toronto.

The U.S. order directs federal government references and maps to use the new name, although Canadians are obviously still calling it Lake Ontario.

Apple and Google subsequently reflected the “Lake America” designation for U.S. users of their mapping services.

That apparently gave Parker and Stone an idea.

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA,” the creators said in their announcement.

The sarcasm wasn’t exactly subtle.

The promotional image accompanying the announcement shows an “AMERICA” label placed over the familiar South Park sign.

The joke also takes aim at Trump’s broader fascination with renaming places.

Earlier in his presidency, Trump ordered the U.S. government to use “Gulf of America” instead of Gulf of Mexico. More recently, he has floated changing the name of New Mexico to “New America.”

Now South Park has apparently decided to play along.

South Park → South America.

The timing isn’t accidental either.

Parker and Stone have spent recent seasons aggressively satirizing Trump and members of his administration.

The show recently won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for an episode that featured another highly controversial parody of the president.

Rather than backing away from political satire, the creators appear ready to continue it.

Whether “South America” becomes a permanent name is another question.

The series is still listed as South Park on streaming platforms, and the announcement is clearly designed as satire rather than a conventional television rebrand.

When asked how long the change would last, however, Parker and Stone doubled down, saying they were “100% committed to SOUTH AMERICA.”

We’ll see about that.

What we do know is that Toronto now has a strangely personal connection to one of South Park’s newest jokes.

A dispute over the name of the lake sitting beside our city has somehow travelled from Washington to Apple and Google Maps — and now all the way to one of television’s longest-running animated comedies.

South Park — or South America — returns for Season 29 on Wednesday, September 16 at 10 p.m., with new episodes available on Paramount+ the following day in Canada.

And somewhere beside “Lake America,” Toronto will be watching.
