Toronto’s Entertainment District got an extra dose of Mexican star power during TIFF as the cast of Hombre al agua celebrated the film’s Toronto International Film Festival premiere with a night out at Silent H on King Street West.

Gael García Bernal, Esmeralda Pimentel and Jorge Salinas were among those celebrating at Silent H, the upscale modern Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District.

The gathering followed the TIFF premiere of Hombre al agua, bringing some of Mexican cinema’s most recognizable faces together in downtown Toronto during one of the biggest weeks of the year for the city’s entertainment scene.

Hombre al agua is especially personal for García Bernal, who not only stars in the movie but also directs, co-writes and produces it. The film marks another chapter in the acclaimed Mexican actor and filmmaker’s career behind the camera.

García Bernal plays Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard whose life changes after he saves wealthy Mexican businessman Abel, played by Jorge Salinas, from drowning. Abel brings Camilo into his world in Mexico, where Camilo eventually marries Abel’s daughter Juana, played by Esmeralda Pimentel. What initially looks like an incredible change of fortune develops into a story involving wealth, class, family, ambition and control.

For Toronto’s Mexican and wider Latin American community, Silent H was a fitting place for the celebration. The King West restaurant has built its identity around contemporary Mexican cuisine, cocktails and an upscale atmosphere, right in the middle of one of Toronto’s busiest nightlife and entertainment neighbourhoods.

And the Hombre al agua cast wasn’t the only TIFF star sighting at Silent H.

Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek was also spotted at Silent H during TIFF, attending a private celebration connected to his film The Man I Love.

The back-to-back celebrity appearances are putting Silent H firmly on the TIFF radar, with international stars choosing the Mexican restaurant as a place to celebrate their films while in Toronto.

Having García Bernal, Pimentel and Salinas celebrating together in the heart of downtown Toronto was already a special moment for the city’s Latino community. Add Rami Malek to the restaurant’s TIFF guest list, and Silent H is quickly becoming one of the places to watch for celebrity sightings during festival week.

From the red carpet to King West, TIFF continues to bring international cinema directly into the streets, restaurants and nightlife of Toronto — and this year, Silent H is right in the middle of the action.
