The 2026 World Happiness Report is out, and while Nordic countries continue to dominate, there’s a major moment for Latin America.
For the first time ever, Costa Rica has cracked the top five, landing at No. 4 and confirming its rise as one of the happiest places in the world.
The rankings are based on how people rate their own lives, factoring in social support, freedom, income, health, and trust in society.
Countries like Finland, Iceland, and Denmark continue to rank highly due to strong social systems, high levels of trust, low corruption, and a close relationship with nature. In these countries, happiness is closely tied to stability, safety, and quality of life.
Costa Rica’s rise is the headline. Moving from 23rd place in 2023 to 4th in 2026 shows that happiness is not only tied to economic strength.
What stands out is the country’s emphasis on community, lifestyle balance, and connection to nature. The “pura vida” mindset reflects a way of life that values simplicity, relationships, and daily well-being.
This year’s rankings highlight that high income alone does not define happiness. While Nordic countries benefit from strong institutions and public systems, Costa Rica demonstrates that culture, community, and lifestyle can be just as influential.
Canada ranked 25th this year, continuing a trend where major English-speaking countries fall outside the top tier.
The 2026 report shows two different models of happiness. One is built on structure, trust, and public systems. The other is built on community, nature, and lifestyle. Both lead to strong overall well-being, offering different perspectives on what it means to live well.
