The Toronto Home That Signals Christmas — and Raises Thousands for SickKids

On Benjamin Boake Trail, Christmas doesn’t need a countdown — it announces itself in lights. For the 15th year in a row, Amatore and Pat De Sario have transformed their Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue area home into a full-blown holiday spectacle, featuring more than 50,000 LED lights and an ever-growing collection of inflatable decorations.

But this isn’t just about festive cheer. The display doubles as a fundraiser for SickKids Hospital, inspired by the time the family spent there years ago when their daughter Angela was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. A donation box sits out front, along with a guestbook for visitors, and over the years the family has raised about $115,000 for the hospital.

The lights switch on nightly after 5 p.m. from late November through the first week of January. Each year mixes classic pieces with new additions — including this season’s rooftop teddy bear and a six-foot snowwoman — though one tradition never changes: the nativity scene.

Despite weather challenges affecting turnout last year, the impact remains powerful. A handwritten thank-you letter from a young girl months later reminded the family just how meaningful their effort is.

What once embarrassed Angela as a teen has become something she now deeply cherishes. For many neighbors and visitors, the De Sarios’ display is the moment when the holiday season truly begins.
