Argentina is back on top of the field hockey world.
Las Leonas defeated the Netherlands in a dramatic shootout to win the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup, capturing Argentina’s first world title in 16 years and the third in the country’s history.
Playing against the host nation at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Argentina battled back from a 1-0 deficit to finish regulation tied 1-1 before winning the shootout 3-1.
The victory ended the Netherlands’ remarkable run of three consecutive World Cup championships.
The Netherlands entered the final as the dominant force in international women’s field hockey and took the lead through Yibbi Jansen late in the second quarter.
Argentina refused to go away.
With just over six minutes remaining in the match, Majo Granatto scored the equalizer for Las Leonas, forcing the championship to be decided in a shootout.
That’s when Argentine goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino took over.
Cosentino produced a huge performance in the shootout as Argentina defeated the Dutch 3-1, with Sofía Cairo scoring the goal that officially secured the world championship.
The victory was particularly sweet for Argentina because these same two countries met in the 2022 World Cup final.
That time, the Netherlands won.
The Dutch entered the 2026 championship match having won the previous three World Cups and were attempting to make it four straight titles.
Instead, Argentina ended their reign on Dutch soil.
The championship gives Las Leonas their third World Cup title, following previous victories in 2002 and 2010.
Argentina has now moved into second place alone for the most Women’s Hockey World Cup championships, behind only the Netherlands.
The championship adds another chapter to the incredible history of Las Leonas, one of Argentina’s most successful national sports teams.
Sixteen years after their last World Cup victory, Argentina once again stands at the top of women’s field hockey.
And they couldn’t have picked a tougher opponent or a more dramatic way to do it.
Argentina went into the Netherlands, defeated the three-time defending champions in front of their home crowd and brought the World Cup back to South America.
Las Leonas are world champions once again.
