Yes — James Rodríguez has retired from the Colombian national team, not from professional soccer altogether. He announced it today, September 15, at age 35, ending a 15-year international career. He’ll continue playing club football after recently signing with Atlético Nacional.
James leaves Colombia with some ridiculous numbers: 131 appearances, 31 goals and a national-record 43 assists. He played in three World Cups and remains Colombia’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with six goals.
Of course, Brazil 2014 is the moment everyone will remember. He scored six goals to win the World Cup Golden Boot, produced that unforgettable volley against Uruguay, and helped Colombia reach its first World Cup quarterfinal. More than a decade later, he was named the best player at Copa América 2024 after leading Colombia to the final.
His farewell was emotional. James said representing Colombia had been one of the greatest honours of his life and thanked supporters for the matches, joy, tears and dreams they shared.
