Renata Zarazúa Stuns Madison Keys in US Open Thriller, Making History for Mexico

On Day Two of the 2025 US Open, the tennis world witnessed one of the biggest early shocks of the tournament: Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa took down world No. 6 and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in a dramatic three-set battle, 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

The match, played in front of an electrified New York crowd, lasted over three hours and showcased both Zarazúa’s resilience and Keys’ unraveling under pressure. Despite losing the first set in a tense tiebreak, the 27-year-old from Mexico City stayed calm and fought her way back. She captured the second set with a composed 7-3 tiebreak, then sealed the upset in the deciding set by breaking Keys’ serve in the final game.

For Zarazúa, ranked No. 82, the victory marks the biggest win of her career — her first ever against a top-10 opponent in seven attempts. Even more historic, she became the first Mexican player in over 30 years to defeat a seeded player at a Grand Slam, following in the footsteps of Angélica Gavaldón, who last achieved the feat in 1995 at the Australian Open.

Keys, meanwhile, suffered her earliest Grand Slam exit since 2021, undone by a staggering 89 unforced errors. The loss also made her the first top-10 seed to fall at this year’s US Open.

Zarazúa’s breakthrough adds another chapter to her inspiring journey. She has steadily climbed the ranks in recent years, making history as the first Mexican woman in two decades to reach a Grand Slam main draw at Roland Garros in 2020, and winning matches at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

Now, with this career-defining triumph, she advances to the second round to face France’s Diane Parry — a chance to extend a run that has already made headlines across Mexico and beyond.

For Latin American tennis, often overlooked on the global stage, Zarazúa’s victory is more than just an upset — it’s a moment of pride, possibility, and proof that persistence pays off.
