Messi returns and scores twice as Inter Miami defeats Philadelphia

Lionel Messi made a triumphant return for Inter Miami after a lengthy absence, scoring two goals and assisting on a third in a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. Messi had been sidelined since June 1 due to national team commitments and a right ankle injury. Despite Miami’s hot and humid conditions, Messi showed no signs of rust, scoring twice in quick succession during the first half.

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino praised Messi’s performance, noting that he completed the full 90 minutes without issue. Miami, which secured an MLS playoff spot in Messi’s absence, now leads the Supporters Shield standings. Luis Suárez also contributed with an assist and a late goal, sealing Miami’s victory.

Philadelphia started strong with an early goal but couldn’t maintain control. Despite multiple attempts to equalize in the second half, Messi’s late assist to Suárez secured the win for Miami. The match saw some drama with Messi taking a hard tackle but recovering quickly, and two Miami defenders leaving due to injuries.

Both teams return to league action with away games on Wednesday.
