The leading goal scorer in the NHL is on the brink of achieving the 15th 70-goal season in league history. During the Toronto Maple Leafs’ last home game of the 2023-24 regular season, Auston Matthews scored his 69th goal, extending his point streak to 14 games. Despite Matthews’ milestone, the Leafs lost to the Detroit Red Wings in overtime, with Dylan Larkin securing the win for the Wings. Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe acknowledged the distraction posed by Matthews’ impending milestone but emphasized the team’s focus on their on-ice objectives. Matthews expressed gratitude for the support of the fans but remained focused on his performance. With one or possibly two games left in the season, Matthews has the opportunity to reach 70 goals. However, Keefe indicated that decisions regarding player rest and lineup considerations would prioritize the team’s best interests. Despite the loss, the Leafs are set to start the playoffs on the road, with their opponent yet to be determined.
