María Corina Machado Wins Nobel Peace Prize for Venezuela’s Fight for Democracy

In a historic moment for Venezuela, María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering fight to restore democracy and human rights in her country. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Machado “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

The award brings global attention to Venezuela’s ongoing political crisis, where Machado has long been a leading opposition voice against authoritarian rule. Her recognition underscores the international community’s support for peaceful democratic change in the region.

This year’s Nobel Peace announcement also carried political undertones, as it came amid former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated public claims that he deserves the prize. Experts had dismissed that possibility, noting Trump’s actions have undermined the international cooperation the Nobel committee values.

Valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (about $1.2 million USD), the prize will be officially presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

For many Venezuelans, Machado’s Nobel win is more than a personal achievement — it’s a beacon of hope that the world is still watching their fight for freedom.
