Guatemala’s penitentiary system has requested an investigation into over 100 prison guards on charges such as abuse of power, after a prison clean-out revealed hidden cash and pets. The investigation targets 102 guards from “El Infiernito” prison, located 50 miles south of the capital, which housed suspected Barrio 18 gang members. On June 2, authorities transferred 225 inmates to regain control of the prison. The next day, they discovered nearly $24,000 in cash, 30 mobile phones, and various pets, including raccoons, hawks, and crocodiles. The guards face potential charges of abuse of power, breach of duty, disobedience, failure to disclose, and usurping power.
