One of the most recognizable voices in soccer is heading to Netflix.

Argentine-American broadcaster Andrés Cantor, famous around the world for his legendary extended “GOOOOL!” call, is joining Netflix’s broadcast team for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Netflix announced Cantor as the first play-by-play broadcaster confirmed for its coverage of the tournament, opening a new chapter for a commentator whose voice has been part of World Cup soccer for decades.

And for Latino soccer fans, it’s hard to imagine a World Cup without hearing that famous call.

From Telemundo to Netflix

Cantor’s move is especially significant because he has spent the past 27 years with Telemundo after previously working for Univision.

Now, at 63, he’s making the jump from traditional Spanish-language television to one of the world’s largest streaming platforms.

Cantor told the Associated Press that streaming represents where audiences are increasingly consuming sports and entertainment, describing the move as a new chapter and challenge in his career.

His first assignment with Netflix will come before the tournament even begins.

Cantor will be part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final Draw on December 11 in Rio de Janeiro before calling matches when the tournament kicks off in Brazil next summer.

A Voice Generations of Latino Soccer Fans Know

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cantor has spent more than four decades calling some of the biggest soccer matches in the world.

He has covered every men’s FIFA World Cup since 1986 and has also worked four Women’s World Cups, including the inaugural tournament in 1991.

Brazil 2027 will be his fifth Women’s World Cup.

But statistics only tell part of his story.

Cantor’s passionate style — and particularly his unmistakable “GOOOOL!” celebration — helped make him one of the most recognizable Spanish-language sports broadcasters in North America.

His calls have crossed language barriers, becoming part of the experience of watching major international soccer matches even for fans who don’t speak Spanish.

A Historic World Cup in Brazil

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will also make history of its own.

Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Women’s World Cup when the 32-team tournament runs from June 24 through July 25, 2027.

Matches will be played across eight Brazilian cities, with Rio de Janeiro’s legendary Maracanã Stadium hosting both the opening match and the final.

It’s a setting Cantor believes could make the tournament particularly special.

Brazil’s deep connection to soccer, combined with the rapid growth of the women’s game around the world, will give Netflix a massive international sporting event as it continues expanding into live sports.

Netflix Is Going Big on Soccer

Netflix secured rights to the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups, marking the first time the streaming platform has acquired an entire FIFA competition.

For Canadian fans, there’s another important detail: every match from the 2027 Women’s World Cup will stream live on Netflix in Canada.

Canadian coverage will be available in English and French, while viewers in the United States will have English and Spanish broadcasts.

Cantor is expected to work across both English- and Spanish-language coverage in North America, although his exact match schedule has not yet been announced.

Netflix says additional commentators and studio analysts will be revealed as the tournament approaches.

A New Home for “GOOOOL!”

For Cantor, the platform may be changing, but the passion probably won’t.

After decades of World Cups, Copa Américas, Champions League matches, Premier League games, Major League Soccer and Olympic tournaments, one of soccer’s most famous voices is entering the streaming era.

And next summer, when the ball hits the back of the net in Brazil, millions of fans could once again hear one of the most famous sounds in Latino soccer culture:

“GOOOOOOOOOOL!”
