Google to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps within the U.S.

Google has confirmed that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps within the U.S., following an executive order from Donald Trump. In Mexico, it will retain the name Gulf of Mexico, while users outside the U.S. and Mexico will see both names. Additionally, Denali, the tallest peak in North America, will revert to its former name, Mount McKinley, in the U.S.

Google explained that its naming conventions follow official government updates, with localized variations for users in different countries. The U.S. Interior Department confirmed these changes as part of Trump’s executive actions after taking office.

The decision sparked a lighthearted response from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who jokingly suggested renaming North America as “América Mexicana.” Trump defended the change, stating the name Gulf of America had a “beautiful ring” and linking it to immigration concerns.

Google has previously adopted similar conventions for disputed place names, such as labeling the water between Japan and South Korea as “Sea of Japan (East Sea)” and handling the Persian Gulf naming controversy by including both “Persian Gulf” and “Arabian Gulf” labels.
