Four Latin American countries have been named among the 10 Most Desirable Countries in the World in the 2025 Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards.

And Latin America didn’t just sneak onto the list — Costa Rica finished #2 in the world, behind only Japan. Wanderlust

Latin America Continues to Win Over Travellers

It’s not hard to understand the appeal.

Costa Rica has become internationally known for its wildlife, rainforests, beaches and pura vida lifestyle. Peru combines destinations like Machu Picchu and the Andes with Indigenous culture and one of Latin America’s most celebrated food scenes.

Brazil offers everything from Rio de Janeiro and its beaches to the Amazon, while Ecuador packs the Galápagos Islands, Andes, Amazon and Pacific Coast into one relatively small country.

The awards were decided after 208,000 Wanderlust readers cast more than 4.8 million votes across 22 categories, making this a reader-driven travel ranking rather than a list selected by an editorial panel. Wanderlust

Latin America also performed strongly beyond the overall country ranking. Brazil placed #2 for Nature & Wildlife, Colombia #3, Ecuador #5 and Costa Rica #8. Peru finished #4 for Adventure, Colombia #9, while Mexico ranked #6 globally for Gastronomy. Wanderlust

For travellers looking ahead to their next big trip, the message from Wanderlust readers is pretty clear: Latin America remains one of the world’s most desirable regions to explore.
