Latin America has plenty to smile about in the latest World Happiness Report 2026, with Costa Rica making history and several countries from the region placing surprisingly high on the global list.

Finland remains the happiest country in the world for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland and Denmark. But the biggest story from a Latin American perspective might be Costa Rica landing at #4 in the world — the highest position ever achieved by a Latin American country. 

And Costa Rica isn’t alone.

Mexico comes in at #12 globally, putting two Latin American countries inside the world’s top 12.

Further down, Belize ranks #27, Uruguay #31, Brazil #32, El Salvador #37, Panama #39 and Guatemala #42. Argentina sits at #44, followed by Chile at #50 and Nicaragua at #51. 

For South America specifically, Uruguay takes the top spot at #31, barely edging Brazil at #32. Argentina (#44), Chile (#50), Paraguay (#57), Ecuador (#59), Colombia (#68), Peru (#72), Bolivia (#78) and Venezuela (#80) follow. 

One interesting comparison for us here in Toronto: Costa Rica and Mexico both rank ahead of Canada, which comes in at #25 with a life-evaluation score of 6.741. Costa Rica scored 7.439 while Mexico scored 6.972. 

Maybe Happiness Isn’t Just About Money

The World Happiness Report isn’t simply a ranking of the world’s richest countries. People are asked to evaluate the overall quality of their own lives on a scale from 0 to 10, using nationally representative Gallup World Poll data. Researchers then examine factors including income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption to help understand differences between countries. 

That makes Latin America’s presence near the top particularly interesting.

The region may not have the income levels of many Western countries, but strong family relationships, friendships, community and social connections have long been important parts of Latin American life. The rankings are another reminder that quality of life can involve much more than what’s sitting in your bank account.

And with Costa Rica now sitting alongside Finland, Iceland and Denmark in the world’s top four, Latin America isn’t just part of the happiness conversation anymore — it’s near the very top of it.
