Murillo stated that Colombia is open to discussions with Panama and aims to meet with Mulino before his July 1 inauguration to address migration issues. He suggested that Mulino’s comments about deporting migrants might have been campaign rhetoric.

The Darien Gap, a perilous jungle route, sees significant migrant traffic, primarily from Venezuelans fleeing economic crises. In 2023, a record 520,000 people, including 120,000 children, crossed the gap. Migrants face numerous dangers, including harsh terrain, wild animals, and violent gangs.

Murillo underscored the need to ensure safe and regulated migration to prevent migrants from falling prey to criminals. Despite Mulino’s stance, Colombia aims to continue supporting humanitarian measures for migrants traversing the Darien Gap.
