The number of people who died in a mudslide in western Colombia has gone up to 34, according to authorities. The mudslide happened on a busy road on Friday in a hilly area connecting Quibdó and Medellín.
Initially, the national disaster management unit said at least 18 people died, and 35 injured were taken to hospitals. However, the Chocó governor’s office, overseeing search and rescue efforts, reported a new death toll on Saturday. They said 17 bodies have been identified, and they are working to identify 17 more. The prosecutor’s office confirmed the total number of deaths.
Colombian Vice-President Francia Márquez, in a message on social media, mentioned an ongoing search for people still trapped. She said some children were among the victims but didn’t give a number.
The cause of the mudslide wasn’t specified by the risk management unit, but the defense department said that ongoing rain was making rescue operations difficult. A video on social media claimed to show the mudslide, but its authenticity couldn’t be verified.
President Gustavo Petro tweeted that his government would provide all needed support for what he called a “horrible tragedy.”
