A Chilean-born billionaire is making history in American sports, joining the ownership group of one of the NFL’s most recognizable franchises.

Jean Eric Salata, a Chilean-born businessman and private equity investor, has reached an agreement to purchase a 2.1% ownership stake in the Miami Dolphins and their affiliated sports businesses, in a deal valuing the organization at more than US$12.5 billion.

The agreement represents a new record valuation for a minority ownership transaction in the National Football League (NFL).

For Latin America, it’s another example of a businessman with roots in the region reaching the highest levels of international finance and professional sports.

Who Is Jean Eric Salata, the Chilean Billionaire Buying Into the Miami Dolphins?

Born in Chile, Jean Eric Salata moved to the United States with his family when he was just five years old.

He grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, attended the University of Pennsylvania and later worked at consulting firm Bain & Company.

But it was in Asia where Salata built his multibillion-dollar fortune.

He founded Baring Private Equity Asia, an investment firm based in Hong Kong that grew into a major player in Asian private equity.

In 2022, Swedish investment company EQT acquired his firm, and Salata went on to become chairman of EQT AB.

Today, the 60-year-old businessman has an estimated net worth of US$8.4 billion, according to Forbes figures cited in reports of the transaction.

From being born in Chile to building a financial empire in Asia and now investing in the NFL, Salata’s career has taken him across three continents.

How Much Is the Miami Dolphins Deal Worth?

According to Sports Business Journal, Salata has agreed to purchase 2.1% of the Miami Dolphins and related businesses from principal owner Stephen Ross.

The reported valuation is slightly above US$12.5 billion, putting the implied value of Salata’s investment at more than US$262 million.

But there’s more to this deal than football.

The investment also includes interests in several major sports and entertainment properties:

  • The Miami Dolphins NFL franchise
  • Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida
  • The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix
  • The Miami Open tennis tournament

These properties make the transaction particularly valuable, combining professional football, international motorsports, tennis and major entertainment events.

Importantly, the US$12.5 billion figure is the valuation implied by the minority transaction across the affiliated businesses, not the purchase price of the Dolphins alone.

Why Is This NFL Deal Breaking Records?

NFL franchises have become some of the world’s most valuable sports investments.

In December 2024, transactions involving Miami Dolphins minority ownership valued the broader organization at approximately US$8.1 billion.

By March 2026, a separate investment by Xiaomi co-founder Lin Bin established a valuation of US$12.5 billion.

Now, Salata’s agreement reportedly places that figure slightly higher, setting another record for an NFL minority stake transaction.

That’s an increase of more than 54% in the implied valuation in less than two years.

The deal also highlights the growing demand among international billionaires to own even small portions of major American sports franchises.

From Chile to the NFL: A Latin American Success Story

For Latin Americans around the world, Jean Eric Salata’s story is particularly interesting.

While he spent most of his life outside Chile, his journey began in South America before taking him into some of the world’s most competitive financial markets.

His latest investment places him among an exclusive group of wealthy investors with ownership interests in NFL franchises.

It’s also a reminder that Latin American success stories aren’t limited to music, soccer, entertainment or politics.

Latin American-born entrepreneurs and investors are increasingly visible in global finance, technology and professional sports.

And Salata’s investment is a particularly high-profile example.

Is Jean Eric Salata Officially a Miami Dolphins Owner?

Not quite yet.

The NFL’s finance committee has reportedly approved the transaction, but the agreement still requires formal approval from NFL team owners.

That vote is expected during an upcoming league meeting in New York.

Once approved, Salata would join the Miami Dolphins’ minority ownership group, while Stephen Ross would remain the franchise’s principal owner.

The agreement does not give Salata control over the team’s football operations.

A Billion-Dollar Investment That Goes Beyond Football

The Miami Dolphins may be the headline, but this investment represents something much bigger.

With Hard Rock Stadium, Formula 1 and international tennis included in the broader portfolio, Salata is buying into a major sports and entertainment business in one of America’s most internationally connected cities.

And for a businessman born in Chile, it’s another extraordinary chapter in a career that has already spanned continents and industries.

From Chile to Hong Kong to Miami, Jean Eric Salata’s journey shows just how far Latin American-born entrepreneurs can go on the global stage.
