Chile Cracks Down on Online Gambling

Chile’s Supreme Court has ruled that the country’s six biggest internet providers must block access to online gambling and sports betting sites, calling them illegal.

The decision, handed down on September 29, came after a complaint from Lotería de Concepción and overturns a lower court ruling from earlier this year. According to the court, only approved operators — like Lotería, Polla Chilena, Teletrak, racetracks, and casinos — are legally allowed to run games of chance in Chile.

By refusing to block unlicensed sites, ISPs were found to be acting “arbitrarily,” since these platforms cut into Lotería’s exclusive rights. While two judges disagreed, the majority sided with regulators and state-backed operators.

The ruling is a big step in Chile’s push to clamp down on unregulated online betting, signaling tighter control over who gets to run gambling platforms in the country.
