Wagner Moura just made history at the Golden Globes.

The “The Secret Agent” star won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama at Sunday night’s awards ceremony, becoming the first Brazilian actor ever to win in this category — a landmark moment not only for Moura, but for Brazilian cinema as a whole.

During his acceptance speech, Moura reflected on the deeper meaning behind the film, calling it a story about memory, generational trauma, and the values we pass forward. He dedicated the moment to people “sticking with their values in difficult moments,” turning the win into something bigger than just a trophy.

Moura beat out a stacked field of nominees including Joel Edgerton, Oscar Isaac, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, and Jeremy Allen White, making the victory even more impressive.

The Golden Globes took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, hosted again by comedian Nikki Glaser. But this year, one of the most powerful stories of the night came from Brazil: in addition to Moura’s win, “The Secret Agent”also earned major nominations — including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Foreign Language Film, another milestone for Brazilian productions on the world stage.

Set in 1977 Brazil under military rule, “The Secret Agent” follows Moura’s character, a technology expert and political dissident attempting to escape persecution while resisting an authoritarian regime. The film — directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho — first gained major momentum at the Cannes Film Festival, where it became one of the most celebrated titles of the year.

For fans who first discovered Moura through Narcos, this win is another reminder: he’s not just a star — he’s one of the most important performers coming out of Latin America today.
