BMO Field’s World Cup Makeover Turning Heads — and Raising Eyebrows

March 18, 2026

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup around the corner, BMO Field is getting a massive upgrade — but not everyone is sold on how it looks.

The stadium is expanding from about 28,000 to 45,000 seats, thanks to temporary structures and renovations totaling $146 million. From the outside, those steep, towering stands have sparked real concern online, with some fans calling them “terrifying” and questioning their safety.

But behind the scenes, organizers aren’t worried. An Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment spokesperson reassured fans that everything is being built by global stadium experts and meets strict FIFA safety standards.

Inside the stadium, the vibe seems completely different.

Jonathan Osorio, a Toronto FC veteran, says the transformation looks “really cool” and hinted at what’s coming: a packed stadium, big energy, and a World Cup atmosphere Toronto hasn’t seen before.

And this isn’t new territory — BMO Field previously added temporary seating for major events like the Grey Cup and MLS Cup in 2016.

Toronto will host six World Cup matches, including Canada’s opener on June 12. So while the outside might look a little intense right now, the real test will come when the stadium is full — and the city is buzzing.

Toronto FC v Inter Miami CF – May 9, 2026

May 9 isn’t just a game — it’s a city moment, and we’re working directly with MLSE to bring the Toronto Latinos community together for Toronto FC vs Inter Miami at BMO Field — a chance to watch Messi and other World Cup-bound stars live, right here in our backyard weeks before the FIFA World Cup.

But we’re not just pulling up for 90 minutes. We’re starting with a pre-party at the stadium hours before the match, and finishing the night with an afterparty steps from the field. No moving your car. No breaking the vibe. Just one full-day experience. If you’re coming, come with us.
