The International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials are set to visit Argentina for negotiations with the new government under President Javier Milei. The discussions will revolve around a $44 billion program that faced challenges during the previous administration. The delegation is expected to arrive in Buenos Aires on Thursday, and the talks will be led by Milei’s cabinet chief, Nicolas Posse, and Economy Minister Luis Caputo. Argentina faces a payment of nearly $2.6 billion in debt maturities to the IMF in January and February. This marks the first in-person meeting between Milei’s administration and IMF staff, signaling a shift in approach compared to the previous government. Milei’s economic measures, including spending cuts and currency devaluation, have been commended by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Milei expressed confidence that the IMF will support his austerity-driven economic plan, stating that the Fund sees them as heroes.
