William Contreras has given Venezuela another reason to celebrate, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to their first World Series championship and earning MVP honours along the way.
The 28-year-old Venezuelan catcher delivered an outstanding performance as Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night, October 28, capturing the 2026 World Series in five games.
For the Brewers, it was a championship 57 seasons in the making. For Contreras, it was another remarkable achievement in a year that has already been historic for Venezuelan baseball.
And for baseball fans across Latin America, it was another reminder of the incredible talent the region continues to produce.
William Contreras Delivers When It Matters Most
Contreras was one of Milwaukee’s most consistent performers throughout the postseason, but he saved some of his best baseball for the World Series.
The Venezuelan star finished the championship series batting .381, collecting eight hits and four RBIs in five games.
In Wednesday’s decisive Game 5, he delivered an important RBI double in the sixth inning, helping Milwaukee extend its lead over Tampa Bay.
But his contributions went well beyond hitting.
Behind the plate, Contreras guided Milwaukee’s pitching staff through five games, throwing out four attempted base stealers and successfully overturning 10 of 13 calls using Major League Baseball’s new Automated Ball-Strike challenge system.
His combination of offensive production, defensive leadership and baseball intelligence earned him the World Series MVP award.

Milwaukee Wins Its First World Series Championship
The Brewers entered the 2026 season looking to build on years of regular-season success that had repeatedly ended in postseason disappointment.
This time, everything came together.
Milwaukee finished the regular season with a franchise-record 103 victories before putting together an impressive playoff run.
The Brewers eliminated the San Diego Padres, swept the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and defeated Tampa Bay to capture the franchise’s first World Series title.
Before Wednesday, Milwaukee’s only previous World Series appearance had come in 1982, when the Brewers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
Now, more than four decades later, the city finally has its championship.

A Historic Year for Venezuelan Baseball
What makes Contreras’ achievement even more special is that it comes just seven months after Venezuela captured its first World Baseball Classic championship.
In March, Venezuela defeated the United States 3-2 in Miami to win the international tournament for the first time.
Contreras was part of that championship roster alongside fellow Brewers Jackson Chourio and Antonio Senzatela.
All three players have now accomplished something extraordinarily rare: winning the World Baseball Classic and World Series in the same calendar year.
Before 2026, only two players had achieved that feat.
For Contreras, the moment was deeply personal.
Celebrating Milwaukee’s championship with the Venezuelan flag draped around his shoulders, he spoke emotionally about what the victory meant to his homeland.
“It’s history, history for my country. I love Venezuela. It’s my country,” Contreras said.
Joining an Exclusive Group of Venezuelan Legends
Contreras also becomes just the third Venezuelan player to win World Series MVP honours.
He joins Pablo Sandoval, who earned the award with the San Francisco Giants in 2012, and Salvador Pérez, who won it with the Kansas City Royals in 2015.
Interestingly, Pérez and Contreras are both catchers, highlighting Venezuela’s remarkable tradition of producing elite talent at the position.
Contreras is also only the eighth catcher in MLB history to receive World Series MVP honours.
The championship celebrations included an emotional embrace with his older brother, Willson Contreras, who won the World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
The brothers, who grew up in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, have now both experienced baseball’s ultimate achievement.
Venezuela Continues to Make Its Mark on Baseball
From Miguel Cabrera and José Altuve to Ronald Acuña Jr., Salvador Pérez and now William Contreras, Venezuela has established itself as one of baseball’s great talent-producing nations.
The country’s influence extends far beyond Major League Baseball, with Venezuelan players becoming household names throughout North America, the Caribbean and Latin America.
For Venezuelan communities in Toronto and across Canada, Contreras’ latest achievement offers another reason to celebrate their country’s sporting success.
With a World Baseball Classic championship in March and a World Series MVP award in October, 2026 has become a year Venezuelan baseball fans won’t soon forget.
Milwaukee finally has its World Series championship. William Contreras has his MVP trophy. And Venezuela has another baseball hero.
