Basketball fans are in for a treat this weekend as Team Canada returns home to face Puerto Rico in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers. The highly anticipated matchup takes place Friday night at the TD Coliseum and promises to be one of the biggest international basketball games held in Canada this year.
Canada enters the third qualifying window with a perfect 4-0 record after victories over the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica earlier this year. Led by NBA MVP and champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Team Canada is aiming to continue its unbeaten run while building toward the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Joining Gilgeous-Alexander on the roster are NBA standouts Dillon Brooks and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, giving Canadian fans a rare opportunity to watch some of the country’s biggest basketball stars compete on home court.
Canada Basketball General Manager Rowan Barrett is hoping fans answer the call.
“We very rarely get opportunities to play in our country,” Barrett said this week, encouraging Canadians to fill the arena and support a team that has quickly become one of the world’s basketball powers.
Puerto Rico Arrives with José Alvarado
For the Latin American community, all eyes will be on Puerto Rico and NBA star José Alvarado.
Nicknamed “Grand Theft Alvarado,” the fearless point guard has become one of Puerto Rico’s biggest sporting icons thanks to his relentless defense, infectious energy, and leadership. Every time he puts on the Puerto Rican jersey, he brings the same passion that has made him a fan favourite in the NBA.
Puerto Rico has long been one of the strongest basketball nations in the Americas, and whenever they face Canada, the games are competitive, physical, and full of emotion.
A Big Night for Canada’s Latin Basketball Community
With thousands of Puerto Ricans and Latin American basketball fans living across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Friday’s game is expected to have an incredible international atmosphere. Expect Canadian flags, Puerto Rican flags, passionate chants, and two proud basketball cultures colliding on the court.
Whether you’re cheering for Team Canada or proudly supporting Puerto Rico, this is the kind of international sporting event that doesn’t come around often.
For basketball fans—and especially for Toronto’s Latin community—it’s a chance to watch world-class talent without leaving home.
