As millions of fans arrive in North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a new survey suggests that the tournament could also trigger a significant increase in the adult entertainment industry.
According to a survey conducted by European platform Erobella, an estimated 9,000 sex workers are planning to travel to Canada, the United States, and Mexico during the World Cup, while another 22,000 are considering making the trip.
The survey found that many workers expect major sporting events like the World Cup to create increased demand for adult services, similar to what has been reported during previous international tournaments and large-scale events.
Researchers found that more than 1,100 respondents from the United Kingdom and Germany alone indicated plans to travel to North America during the tournament. Many cited the potential for higher earnings as millions of visitors descend on host cities.
Toronto, one of the official host cities for the World Cup, is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the tournament. Matches will also take place across the United States and Mexico, creating one of the largest sporting events in history.
The report also highlighted challenges facing some workers, particularly those planning to enter the United States. American immigration rules can restrict entry for individuals who have participated in certain forms of sex work, even if those activities were legal in their home countries.
While the projections are based on survey estimates and not guaranteed outcomes, the findings offer a glimpse into the broader economic ripple effects of the World Cup. Beyond hotels, restaurants, airlines, and entertainment venues, major sporting events often impact industries that are rarely discussed publicly.
With the tournament now underway, host cities across North America are preparing for an unprecedented influx of visitors and the many economic opportunities — and challenges — that come with it.
